The Australian online holiday booking agency Wotif.com, which focuses on the Australian and Asian markets, says its figures for 2010 show its customers are going bonkers for Bali.
We topped its list of most-favoured destinations for Australians and Asian travellers in 2010, knocking Singapore from the No 1 spot it has enjoyed for three years running.
Hong Kong came in second with Singapore third.
Wotif’s executive general manager Asia, Matthew Varley, said: “Bali has always been a very popular destination with Wotif.com’s largely Australian and Asian following of travellers.
“With the region continuing to expand and improve its accommodation options it has really shown its potential as a travel destination through our site this year.”
Varley added: “One region to watch in 2011 is Indonesia. Bali especially has managed to harness the positive hype around the major Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love, converting many into lovers of Bali. This year we expect travellers’ love affairs with Bali to continue and its booking numbers to keep growing.”
Wotif’s Top 10 destinations, in order, are: Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Koh Samui, Shanghai and Tokyo.
The global travel and tourism industry is extremely optimistic that 2011 will see it leave the global financial downturn behind, according to the latest survey of World Travel Market’s Meridian Club, the industry’s most senior buyers.
Almost eight out of 10 (78 percent) Meridian Club members polled say they are optimistic for the industry’s prospects in 2011.
More than half (54 percent) of the 330 senior buyers polled said the industry would perform better in 2011 than in 2010.
“It’s been a great start to the year so far following on from a good finish to last year,” said one Meridian Club member.
A large majority of the Meridian Club members polled said more bookings had already been made this year compared to recent years.Filed under: Headlines
